The Acropolis is a cultural UNESCO World Heritage Property. The Acropolis of Athens and the monuments placed there are universal symbols of the classical spirit and civilization and form the greatest architectural and artistic complex bequeathed by the ancient Greeks to the world. Athens’s citadel was a place where great artists created masterpieces under the guidance of the sculptor Pheidias, who transformed the rocky hill into a unique monument of thought and the arts. The Parthenon, built by Ictinus; the Erechtheon; the Propylaea or the monumental entrance to the Acropolis, designed by Mnesicles; and the small temple to Athena Nike are just a few of the breathtaking sights to explore.

The Temple of Olympian Zeus in Athens, also known as the Olympieion, was built over several centuries starting in the 6th century BC and only finally completed by the Roman Emperor Hadrian in AD 131. Its unusually tall pillars and ambitious layout made the temple one of the largest ever built in the ancient world. The temple’s glory was short-lived, as it fell into disuse after being pillaged during a barbarian invasion in the 3rd century AD, just about a century after its completion. The Temple has stood through the ages and remains a glorious sight to see.

The Corinth Canal is an important infrastructure which allows ships to enter the Aegean Sea when sailing from the Adriatic. Dug through the Isthmus at sea level, the canal is 6.4 kilometers long with a width of only 25 meters. The canal was dug in the late 19th century. Before its construction, ships in the Aegean Sea that wanted to cross to the Adriatic or anchor in Corinth had to prolong their journey an extra 185 nautical miles by sailing around the entire Peloponnese.

The site of ancient Corinth was first inhabited in the Neolithic period (5000-3000 BC) and flourished as a major Greek city from the 8th century BC until its destruction by the Romans in 146 BC. Its commanding position near the Isthmus of Corinth was the primary basis of its importance. Corinth controlled the “Diolkos”, the 6th-century BC stone-paved roadway that connected the Saronic Gulf with the Gulf of Corinth.
